Tiles that Bind
The sidewalks within the Acadian Memorial Meditation Garden at the foot of the Deportation Cross are covered with mosaic Acadian Family Coats of Arms. The muted colors of broken Italian tiles come together as a work of art, symbolic of the families separated by exile and reunited in Louisiana. These are fitting tributes to the Acadian families they represent and a way to remember these brave and courageous souls.
Highlighted at the center of the multi-tiled work of art, directly below the Deportation Cross, are the family crests of the First Elected Acadian Governor of Louisiana, Alexandre Mouton, and the First Female Acadian Governor, Kathleen Babineaux Blanco. Immense interest and pride have been generated by these crests, both for the families they represent and for the Acadian legacy.
